Ethical
During this project I asked myself how I could turn my project that I tailored around a personal problem with design errors and apply it to everyone else or people who need help. A part of my project has to do with typography and communication, a key part to my typography is legibility so I looked into Dyslexia and how typography could be used to make reading easier.
During my research into Dyslexia I learnt how using all uppercase letters is not easier for people to read so to remedy this I decided to produce a lowercase version of my typeface that could be used on signage. I also learnt how sans serif and more simple typefaces are also more legible for signage.
I’ve also used colour in my signage for the tram lines. I have used 10 distinct colours to differentiate directions for people with impaired sight so if they could not read the font from a distance or not at all they should be able to know what tram to use to get to a certain destination. This will only be effective if the passenger was a frequent user of the tram network so they’d be able to know what tram lines are associated to a certain colour.
I feel like this could be effective to help a small minority, an example of this working is if someone was a few meters away from a stop they could be able to possibly see the bright contrasting colours on the stop and they could tell what tram takes them to work, school or shopping.
Sustainable
For my project I have no real material costs or worries since my project is mainly digital since it is a rebranding.
Theoretically if my project brief was to be applied into practise I still think the cost of my rebranding would be reletively low since it is only a regional project on Helsinki Finland. In terms of material costs my project would apply to any signage, directional maps in urban environments, onboard tram graphics. My rebranding would also possibly apply to smaller changes such as official documents, uniforms and web pages.
I believe my rebranding is justified since their old designs were not usable for people who were not local to Helsinki or foreign. This is why I chose to the the rebranding because people in my travelling group found the system confusing to use.
